International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

November 25th was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Over the last week, students at the Max Rayne Hand in Hand Jerusalem School passed by this memorial, an initiative of 10th grade students. “We did it to raise awareness,” said Rama, Maysam, Larin, and Malak.

“There are names here of 13 women who were murdered in gender-based crimes in Israel this past year, Jewish and Arab, and these were only the names that were published, there are many more who we don’t have.”

“We set up this memorial in order to educate and influence the kids in our class – as kids in high school, there can be a sort of peer pressure to be cool, and not care too much about what happens around us. But these things are happening around us and we need to know about them and do whatever we can to raise awareness and make sure they don’t happen again. We can’t allow this to be something that we just get used to.”
